CLD Attend CILT Annual Lunch 2023

We attended CILT's annual lunch 2023 at One Moorgate Place London. Prior to arriving we had an appointment and meeting with a representative from the Department for Business & Trade, where we discussed the lack of UK Government support for new businesses within the logistics industry, both Haulage and Passenger Transport.

We also discussed the lack of vocational drivers in the UK along with the lack of support for encouraging females to engage in the industry. We did receive some positive feedback although feel much still needs to be done. Especially amongst the younger generation there is a distinct lack of interest in anything from driving a Truck or Bus through to gaining their qualifications in managing such fleets.

CILT's Annual Lunch was attended by many of the industries representatives giving a very good opportunity for networking and engagement. An extremely good presentation from a Mr Paul Newton from Mental Theft enlightened everyone present with regard to information security to common human characteristics, even down to natural personal body language, that threatens a companies security. Do be sure to visit his site at https://mentaltheft.co.uk

Lunch supplied by Searcys and the drinks provided by Visku were superb to say the least. Thanks to CILT for a memorable, highly entertaining and valuable day. Visit https://ciltuk.org.uk for membership enquiries.

CLD Meet Mr Richard Turfitt Senior Traffic Commissioner

CLD met with Mr Miles Dorrington Traffic Commissioner - West Midlands, Mr Jonathan Backhouse - Backhouse Jones Solicitors, and Mr Stuart Clarke Head of Commercial Delivery Team DVSA at the CPT Shrewsbury (West Midlands) event.

Chloe shakes hands nervously with Mr Stuart Clarke DVSA prior to speakers - Salient updates are...

Mr Miles Dorrington TC stated that TM's and Directors/Partners should go "back to basics". Elaborating on the need for them both to review the O licence undertakings regularly along with sections 60 & 62 of Statutory Document number 3

The Directors and TM's should NOT rely on "trust" with the compliance of those undertakings and not to take information on face value from each other and should always cross reference and check. There should be a detailed and through digital/paper audit trail to demonstrate compliance as the TC's will "never trust any word given without tangible evidence".

Mr Stuart Clarke DVSA stated "tyres are the highlight for vehicle checks encompassing date codes, inflations, tread depth, and condition" as these are the number one reason for PG9's being issued at the roadside.

He advised not "trusting" your maintenance provider and not to take them "at face value", a new banding system is being introduced whereby the rankings of maintenance providers will be given.

A bombshell was the change coming in December 2024 where there will be a requirement for drivers to produce 56 days of detailed drivers hours data with no gaps showing for any period. He stressed any other paid work, or obligated volunteering during rest periods MUST be shown as driving/other work/breaks/poa.

Mr Jonathan Backhouse spoke at length regarding the need to recognise drivers as "professionals", and to afford them with adequate and detailed training at every opportunity.

He stated there must be respect throughout the organisation, highlighting the issue with defects reported by drivers going ignored as "no fault found" by maintenance staff. He stated that "In the event a driver reports a defect, that driver is in that vehicle for hours at a time, every day, so that defect is evidentially there a workshop must fully investigate as who to know better than the driver".

We have only highlighted here some pointers from the speakers if you wish to know more do contact us.
